Curator meets artist is at the core of my work and practice as a ceramicist, academic, and curator.

Slothpot

[New York]

After earning a BA in art history and visual culture with a minor in journalism, I entered the workforce in 2020 with 3 years of museum and gallery experience with curatorial and art handling work. This gave insight into the practices of accredited institutions. Academic research in Black History, contemporary art in the African Diaspora, and encouragement to pursue higher education brought me to the figuration of the black body, Black Feminist theory and curation, and the intersection of race and contemporary art regarding access, collections, and scholarship.

Artists: Magdalene Odundo, Adebunmi Gbadebo, Kara Walker, Simone Leigh

Researching Black women artists and their contributions to contemporary art, tourism, culture preservation, and the archives has inspired a studio practice that has become an exploration in self and identity as an artist and curator.

Current studio focus: Studio best practices for production, assemblage, glaze mixing, building a portfolio + website

What’s most interesting about this investment in my art and creative pursuits is that I am learning about the value in relationships and the community that comes from those I work with, talk to, and follow the careers of. Very often am I seeing that I am privvy and closer to my next discovery the more energy I put into it- almost as if you get out what you put in and I’m slowly getting more polished.

Branding

What makes Slothpot

Branding identity is something most artists haven’t considered because it would mean that there is a commercialism to their work. I’m thinking about fine artists who have gone the traditional route. However, leveraging person-to-person sales might allow me to find the studio and build independently while I gain experience as an artist and studio manager and navigate the art world as a museum professional.

The logo and recognization of SLOTHPOT is essential in building trust and notability withing my platform. I’m building my career as an artist but also a second income.
